It’s that time of year for mass migration of students off to university. For parents, waving goodbye to their children for the first time, there will be many mixed emotions- jubilation, relief, pride or a sense of loss. But whether you can’t wait to get rid of them or you want to keep them safe forever, every family or student will find themselves with substantial costs to pay over the next three years. As well as the cost of fees, many parents will also have to pay for accommodation, living expenses and other ancillary costs, all amounting to a substantial expense!
On top of the fees there is the worry of the looking after student possessions. Gone are the days of setting off to university with one suitcase, a pot plant and a duvet. The average student probably has a laptop, mobile phone, MP3 player, TV, ipad or other tablet all adding up to a considerable sum, not to mention the designer clothes, the cars and bikes. The days of living like Rick, Neil and Vyvyan in the Young Ones are far from gone for most students.
But things can go wrong. Debts build up due to unforeseen circumstances, student gadgets are vulnerable to theft. So what can you do as a parent to help them on their way and make sure their time at university doesn’t end up like that scene out of the Young Ones with a begging letter to the bank manager when it’s all gone wrong.
