If you are travelling to Greece this summer and worried about the current financial turmoil, there’s some positive news on the insurance front.
Holiday makers have been advised to take cash with them to Greece to cover all expenses in case they can’t withdraw currency from the local Greek banks, leaving travellers vulnerable if they are carrying large amounts of cash around.
With the normal easy availability of cash or the ability to use cards, travel insurance cash limits are relatively low and unlikely to cover the amount of cash people will now wish to take with them.
The good news is AXA, whom we place our travel insurance business with, have agreed to double the cash limit on all Travel products at point of claim for those customers travelling to Greece or any Greek islands and territories ONLY. This extended limit applies to trips taken up to 30th September 2015.
AXA’s new travel insurance cash limit is now £500 per over 16 and £100 per under 16 travelling under their policies.
Please note this change will not be reflected in any documentation. AXA’s agreed position to double the cash limit shall be applied solely to customers should they need to make a claim. Claims will be considered on the provision that all other terms and conditions of the policy are met.
If you do plan to take out enough cash to cover your holiday in Greece, here’s a few tips to help keep your money safe or assist in case you do need to claim.
- Keep your cash either on your person or left out of sight in locked accommodation or in a locked safe.
- Take only the cash you need each time you go out and if you can, lock up the rest. If your villa or hotel doesn’t have a safe, choose a few different hiding places and ensure you lock up whenever you leave.
- Try not to keep all your money in one place — or in one pocket. Invest in a money belt or use bags that zip up securely.
- Insurers require you to keep valuables on you when you board a flight, so keep all cash in your hand luggage, not in your suitcase.
- Keep your bags close to you at all times – at bars and restaurants, loop bag straps around your foot or the chair leg. Be wary of distraction techniques when you are out and about where one person may distract you, for example asking you the time, whilst their accomplice takes your bag.
- In case of any claim get proof that you took out the cash – when you withdraw it in the UK, keep the receipt. If cash is lost or stolen, report the loss to the police and your accommodation/tour operator.
