A deluge of leaves, darker nights and pumpkins in the shops – Autumn has well and truly set in. As it gets colder here are a few suggestions that might help you avoid stressful claims in the colder months.
Clean your gutters
Autumn brings leaves and it is important that gutters are checked periodically for organic matter. Ignoring a build up of leaves for long periods of time can damage the home and the resultant overflowing of water can affect brickwork, pointing and fascia boards.
Avoid damp
The changing temperature can aid mould developing, especially when clothes are bought inside to dry and windows are not opened after showers and there is not enough ventilation in the rooms. If the building experiences condensation, simply wipe it down with a cloth. If the problem persists, consider investing in a dehumidifier which can provide a simple fix to the issue. Left untreated, condensation can lead to mould which can in turn cause rotting and potentially lead to structural problems.
Check brick work
The cold weather can have an adverse affect on brick work, so it’s a good idea to inspect the building and fill in any gaps in the mortar before the freezing weather arrives to prevent more serious damage if left untreated.
Burst pipes
Burst Pipes are a common cause of claims during the winter months and there are several steps that can be taken to ensure that the damage is not widespread. Here are several tips for homeowners to protect their properties from frost damage.
