A customer called up yesterday wanting a quote for travel insurance. He asked for cover for his laptop for £1500 and watch for £4500 to be included within the travel insurance policy.
I advised him that under most standard travel policies, the baggage allowance would not cover these items. Most insurers will only insure a total baggage allowance of up to £1500 with a single article limit of £250.
A travel insurance policy is there to protect your everyday baggage items, not more valuable items.
I advised the customer to get these items insured under his home insurance policy for all risks away from home. Ultimately, if you have jewellery and gadgets of these values, you need to have adequate insurance cover whether you are at home or abroad, all the time, not just whilst you are away on a trip and a home contents policy will give you the best cover at the most reasonable rate.
Also bear in mind that travel insurance often replace lost or damaged item at their second hand value, not on a new for old basis as most home insurance policies do.
So if you have impending travel plans, make sure your valuables are properly insured. You need that cover in place all the time anyway, not just for the holidays!
